The Public Health nurses work in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control and the Ohio Department of Health to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. This is accomplished by documenting occurrences in a national database and tracking any subsequent cases. Each case is reviewed by a Public Health nurse either by a telephone interview or per site visit to assure that the individual has been properly treated and educated regarding the disease process. Follow up occurs as long as the disease is active with the same process being followed for any contacts of the patient. PCGHD employs an epidemiologist to follow communicable diseases and potential outbreaks within the region. The epidemiologist also serves as a great resource for the public health department nurses.
